Croton dichogamus

Croton dichogamus, A Small Indigenous Tree for Drylands

Not every tree needs to grow tall to be useful. Croton dichogamus is an indigenous African shrub or small tree adapted to dry environments, making it an interesting species for landscaping in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid areas.

Its relatively small size makes it suitable for places where space is limited and a compact indigenous plant is preferred. Like other dryland species, it can contribute to the diversity of plants grown in areas where water availability is a major consideration.

For anyone establishing an indigenous garden in a dry region, Croton dichogamus is worth learning about. However, its actual shade provision will be limited by its size, so it is better suited to small spaces than to providing extensive shade.

Growing native dryland plants helps us appreciate the diversity of African vegetation and choose species suited to local conditions.
