Giant Yellow Mulberry (Metuya), Myrianthus holstii
Giant Yellow Mulberry (Metuya), Myrianthus holstii
Two weeks ago, we showed you the male flowers of Metuya. Today, we have the female flowers, and this plant is only 2.5 years old!
Myrianthus holstii, commonly known as Giant Yellow Mulberry, is an indigenous African fruit tree. This particular female plant has started flowering at around two years of age, which is exciting for anyone interested in growing indigenous fruit trees.
Even more interesting is that the plant is doing well in Ngong, outside its natural distribution range. This shows that some indigenous African fruit trees can adapt and grow successfully beyond the areas where they naturally occur, provided the growing conditions are suitable.
For those who think African fruit trees take forever to mature, Metuya is a good reminder that this is not always the case.
Imagine growing your own indigenous fruit trees and enjoying their fruits without waiting decades!
