Silver Oak Mazingira Hub Restoration Project in Kisii
The Kisii and Nyanza region represents a complex and relatively understudied ecological landscape, shaped by the interaction of highland ecosystems, savannah influences and the Lake Victoria regional climate. At the same time, the region faces increasing pressure from a growing population, land-use changes and the widespread use of exotic tree species.
In response to these challenges, Silver Oak Mazingira Hub (SOMH) established a tree nursery in 2022 in the Sikonge area of Kitutu Chache North to support our private ecological restoration efforts.
Since its establishment, we have planted approximately 3,000 indigenous plants as part of our restoration work. We have also focused on identifying, collecting and conserving rare and less commonly cultivated indigenous species, including Hymenodictyon floribundum.
The project represents our commitment to understanding, restoring and conserving the indigenous plant diversity of the Kisii landscape, while building practical knowledge that can support wider restoration efforts in the region.
